F-104C "FG-930" 479th TFW 1964 F-104C, construction number 183-1247, model 483-04-05, US serial number 57-0930, built by Lockheeddate available January 16, 1959, date accepted March 13, 1959, delivery date March 18, 1959, 479th TFW (November 1963-June 1965) November 13, 1963 F-104C sn 57-0930 suffered failure of the left leading edge flap and in-flight extension of the MLGs following a rocket pass at Cuddeback Gun Range. He was able to land safely at Edwards AFB, California; AFSC (October 1967-March 1969); crashed at Edwards AFB, March 1, 1969, pilot Ettinger ejected safely, written off. March 1,1969 F-104C serial number 57-0930 crashed near Edwards AFB after apparent engine failure or engine fire. The pilot ejected safely. Pilot was Captain Robert C. Ettinger, a USAF ARPS (Aerospace Research Pilot School) student, with AFSC, AFFTC, ARPS, Edwards AFB, California. Capt Ettinger was flying a scheduled transition mission (CF-5) from Edwards AFB when this accident occurred. The mission proceeded normally until Capt Ettinger set up for a high key point X-15 approach to Edwards Runway 22. This approach was normal and the pilot then climbed to 18,000 ft MSL for a simulated flameout approach (SFO) to Rwy 22. The pilot added power for his planned approach, fuel remaining 1.500 lbs, approximately 5.000 feet down the 15.000 ft runway, at approx 210 KIAS and 50 ft AGL the pilot increased power from 82% to 100% retracting the speed brakes. As the pilot retracted the gear and notified Edwards tower that he was going around the UHF became inoperative. Immediately after the pilot noticed the fire warning light was illuminated. The pilot started a left climbing turn towards a downwind leg and pulled the throttle back to an intermediate position. Capt Ettinger then heard a loud bang similar to a compressor stall but felt no aircraft vibration. He pushed the throttle back up to Military and experienced a second bang. The pilot chose to eject at this time and afterburner and a zoom maneuver were executed. Altitude was approx 2.000 ft AGL at ejection. The pilot safely ejected with no injuries. The aircraft continued flying on a heading of 150 degrees for another 5 miles until it crashed in the desert on the Edwards AFB reservation 6 miles south of Edwards AFB. copyright @ Grondstein collection
